as we sit here watching the "felini-like" closing ceremonies, i'm a little sad that i didn't participate in the knitting olympics. there was even an alaskan team! I feel like the Bode Miller of the knitting olympics (that is, I didn't really show up, but "I got to party at an olympic level"....)
By the way, did I mention to you that our governor (the second-least popular governor in the nation, second only to that guy in ohio who's been indicted and refuses to resign) designated February 14, 1006 (you know, the day formerly known as valentine's day) as "congenital heart defect day"?
I just hope that all of you had as special and happy a congenital heart defect day as we had at our house.
Ok, so this weekend didn't turn out exactly as I'd anticipated. As it turns out, the legal world apparently did not come grinding to a stop so that I could study for two weeks. Au contraire, in fact. It appears that the attorneys in all the cases I work on spent those two weeks filing many, many motions on many, many things so that I would have plenty of work waiting for me when I got back. So "going into work Friday afternoon to look through my mail" turned into working all weekend. Fortunately, it looks like this is a relatively short-term (3 weeks, maybe) problem. Terry says, keep telling yourself that.
But since you're here, let me make 2 recommendations. First, I finished a great book last week. It was a Christmas gift from my sister-in-law. The book is called The Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruis Zafon. Try it. You'll like it.
Second, as I'm sitting here on my couch on a very cold Alaskan evening, I just have to say that my valentine's day present is the best thing ever. Don't worry - clicking on the link won't take you anywhere gross.
Hi there. Remember me? I used to have a clever little blog all about knitting and spinning.
Then I hurt my shoulder and my blog became less about knitting and spinning because I was able to do less of those things.
Then I quit my job and moved to Alaska, at which point my blog was much more about quitting my job and moving to Alaska (okay, and having freaky cadavar tissue implanted in my shoulder) than it was about knitting and spinning.
Then things got really bad on the knitting blog front, because (having quit my job in CA and moved to Alaska) I had to spend all my free time for 2 months studying for the Alaska Bar Exam.
Well today, after two and a half days of test-taking hell, the Bar Exam is over and I have my life back. YAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!
I spent the rest of the day alternating between napping, and drinking to excess. It's so strange to leave the house not lugging a huge bag full of books and flashcards.
The experience of spending all of your time memorizing pointless formulas and being a miserable person and alienating your friends can be a good reminder of the things you actually enjoyed doing back when you had a life. I know it's not exactly the knitting olympics, but this weekend I'm going to start a new knitting project and get back in the game, so to speak. It's been too long since I did fun things. And way too long since I seriously blogged about knitting. So look out....
it seems like every knitter i know spent yesterday at stitches, west. i have to admit that i am bitterly jealous. and brimming with suspense about the great things they will find there.
i got to go to my first (and hopefully not my last) stitches a year ago with my friend kristie (who, incidentally, was a brand new knitter and a little overwhelmed by the whole thing, but she bounced back and turned into a super gungho maker of cravats and other fancy knitted items....). but we had so much fun and got so many great goodies, although i remain terrified of the knitting with doghair people.
anyway, what a crazy year it's been. now i live in anchorage, 3 billion miles away from santa clara, and not even the knitting train can get me there.
to be fair, i still haven't used a number of the things i bought last year. so maybe i'll make it down to CA next february to replenish my supplies. (while i'm at it, maybe i'll visit the wine country and replenish some other supplies, too).
in other news, the bar exam is in 2 days and my head is very, very full of pneumonic (-- that can't be home that's spelled) devices. i've pretty much arrived at the theoretical limit for how much unhelpful information you can cram inside your brain before you forget how to tie your shoes. my study partners and i are on an absurd study schedule that requires me to be up at this godawful hour on a sunday, so it's off to brave the cold dark streets of anchorage in search of a coffeeshop that will feed us bagels and lattes and let us study all day.....
there are lots of things you can learn about when you should be learning about, say, how to dissolve a limited liability corporation and what constitutes a valid warning in a products liability case.
for example, did you know that "eva air" has a hello kitty plane for flights from Taiwan to Tokyo? According to the airline's website, "The added route is EVA’s gift to Hello Kitty fans and friends, and to fun-loving travelers." It is a terrifying wonder of cross-marketting, with hello kitty themed decor, hello kitty shaped food, and even hello kitty air sickenss bags. (which you can find on e-bay for a mere $9.99) Here are some happy airhostess hanging out with hello kitty.
It's like Alaska Airline's salmon-themed jet, but hello kitty style, complete with hello kitty shaped food items. Oh, and unlike the absurd salmon jet, it probably didn't spark a big ol' controversy about having been paid for with federal tax dollars.
And speaking of hello kitty shaped food ... after learning about hello kitty air, I stumbled upon a hello kitty sightings blog, too. I am particularly interested in getting a hello kitty toaster, so I can make this.
Ok, if you've read this far, you get the knitting link: I learned about hello kitty air from my friend Jeanette, who is a happy person because she is not currently studying for the bar. We will be almost next-door neighbors once T and I move into the new place, and I have promised to teach her to knit. It seems like a fair payment for getting to borrow her sweetie as a bar study partner for 2 months.....
goodness -- it's eight below. knit faster! for the love of god, knit faster!!!!
