i've finally started knitting again!
i just returned from a 3-day trip to Kake, Alaska. this was supposed to be a 1.5-day trip, but i did receive plenty of advance warning about how often flights get cancelled in southeast alaska. so i packed extra clothes, and a long-unfinished knitting project.
the project is an irish hiking scarf knitted with 1-strand each of wool and cashmere. it's very pretty, although not as soft as i thought it would be. anyway, i had lots of time to work on it while stuck in kake for an extra day.
here is a photo of me this morning, finally leaving kake, with my knitting project in hand. you may notice that i'm sitting in the co-pilot's seat. this is why living in alaska is endlessly hilarious to me.
to put this trip into perspective, here's a photo of the kake airport.
here's a photo i took of kake as we were taking off this morning.
and here's one more photo from the (just slightly terrifying) flight back to juneau.
incidentally, i didn't manage to finish the scarf, but i'm coming close. it's been so long since i actually worked on a knitting project. it's nice to be back in the saddle again.
if you ever have a couple of hours to kill in Juneau, there is a lovely yarn store downtown. it's called skeins, and it's on franklin street, and the very nice woman there will happily direct you to the amazing amount of sale yarn.
(when i got home, i noted that their class list looks like a lot of fun, too. i want to learn how to make the "felted stuffed penguin"!)
incidentally, if you do find yourself browsing at skeins between flights, do be careful that you don't miss your flight home.
i did not actually miss my flight home, but i came very close to doing so. in my defense, my near-travel-disaster was totally not my fault. or at least, it was not totally my fault.
who knew it would take 25 minutes to get a taxi in downtown juneau in the middle of the work day. i actually called 3 different cab companies before i found one who would actually agree to send a taxi downtown. "nope, we don't have any cabs right now. they're all at the airport." i had a big fat panic attack before my cab eventually showed up, and by the time i got to the (surprisingly long) security line, my flight was boarding "all rows, all passengers." a little terrifying, since i was pretty ready to get home.
i did, in fact, make it home, new yarn and all. :-)
